Living one’s illness. The experience of new territories of the body

Illness as a specific experience of life entails a new way of living for anyone affected. This personal moment breaks with former landmarks and builds new ones within every aspect of one’s existence. These landmarks imply the discovery of the intimacy of an unknown spatiality. Throughout the experience of illness, patients are particularly exposed to a lot of tactless situations due to their vulnerability. Very often, secret territories of the self, are, in a sense, laid bare by tactless attitudes. Every form of medical or nursing care needs to take into account the risk of symbolic injury.
