The support approach as a specific professional position

The patient’s therapeutic education
By Maela Paul
English

The support approach was gradually introduced in most professional sectors, particularly those where human relationships are significant. The patient’s therapeutic education is without any doubt an aspect of support approaches in the health sector. It is often presented as help—in other words, a psychological and/or social complement of the medical treatment. This support approach is expected to have useful and necessary effects, and even economical results, thanks to better compliance with treatment. But this support approach cannot be limited to prescription optimization, or to good will. Even though there is a risk of it being diverted from the values which characterize it, it is also a means of bringing important change. The aim of this paper is to establish some guidelines to understand first of all what support means and what characterizes it. We will then identify a framework of interaction for this support approach. We will also try to focus on the patient’s therapeutic education.
