The aim of this paper is to briefly define the notion of “self-normativity,” a central element of my thinking, and the impact this concept of the patient’s link to their disease and the norm has on the healthcare relationship. Its active, paradoxical aspect is highlighted, as well as the difficulty for the caregiver in detecting it as a normative process, even in the framework of apparently pathological behaviors. I therefore invite caregivers to open their mind and listen to the chronically ill patient during clinical examination.
