What do we mean by the self-actualization of the elderly living in nursing homes?
This article explores the phenomenon of “self-actualization” among elderly people living in a nursing home with 50 inhabitants and 70 staff across all sectors of activity. To begin, comprehensive interviews were carried out with the inhabitants and collaborators. The study makes it possible to clarify the notion of self-actualization among the elderly through the following elements: definition, demonstration, supporting factors, barriers, and proposed interventions. We highlight a field of tension the collaborators act in: the phenomenological approach of the person, which is necessary to support the self-actualization of the resident, and the necessity for taking account of the resources and needs for the community. A model for a practice supporting the feeling of self-actualization is proposed.
