This paper discusses a study carried out as part of a placement in a medium-term hospital wing and in a psychiatric admissions unit. The aim of the study was to look at the effect of psychiatric institutionalization on the way patients with mental illness perceive the stigmatization they are subjected to in society. The findings enable us to discuss the social reinsertion of these patients who have sometimes been hospitalized for over five years.
