This qualitative research study identifies the differences and similarities between the mother’s and the father’s experience of uncertainty when their child is diagnosed with cerebral palsy, along with the adaptation strategies used. Interviews were conducted with seventeen parents (ten mothers and seven fathers). The results of the research reveal three main factors that trigger uncertainty: uncertainty relating to the child’s survival, the unpredictability of the child’s development, and the ambiguity of the information available on cerebral palsy. The factors that trigger uncertainty are the same for both parents, but their reactions toward these factors and their way of coping with the situation vary.
