Our research examined suffering as an object of the relationship of care, and common experiences of this relationship. We conducted 55 interviews with patients and nurses in an oncology unit. The results underline the central role of this relationship in giving meaning to those in pain. Knowledge of representations of suffering are a tool for understanding the complex realities connected to experiences of suffering, and allow us to design more appropriate evaluation methods, anchored in “practical knowledge.”
