Background: The older population is growing. One particular group among this population, LGBTQ+ [1] older adults, are sometimes discriminated against by health care professionals. In this context, this scoping review sought to describe the extent of knowledge about nursing practice among LGBTQ+ older adults and to summarize the implications for clinical nursing practice.
Method: The scoping review method that uses the framework set out by Peters et al. from the Joanna Briggs Institute was adopted.
Results: The recommendations for nursing LGBTQ+ older adults were grouped into five key areas: raise awareness of the existence of LGBTQ+ older adults, their historical context, and their experiences of health care; refrain from heterocissexist and heterocisnormative preconceptions by adopting inclusive language and an open-minded attitude; support LGBTQ+ older adults and their caregivers or family of choice; create a safe and confidential environment; and finally, promote the inclusion of LGBTQ+ older adults in the health care system.
Conclusion: The results could be used by nurses and other health care professionals to optimize the quality of care for LGBTQ+ older adults and to promote their inclusion.
