The current situation regarding the introduction of research into initial nursing training: Research and professionalization

Background: at the national level, both the process that integrates the nursing education curriculum into university studies and the creation of a program of nursing and paramedical research in hospitals are contributing to the promoting of these professions within the scientific community. Introduction to research is now a teaching unit, focusing on professionalizing and training through research and opening up the issues of the visibility and the development of a discipline in nursing in France. Aim: to establish an inventory of the implementation of the teaching units concerning introduction to research. Method: a survey was sent to 305 educational institutions in the form of an online questionnaire. Results/Discussion: some obstacles to the development of research emerged, including a low level of expertise in paradigms and research methods, the need for training of trainers, a low use of research articles and a gap between the teaching prescribed the program and the teaching actually carried out. Conclusion: the results highlight the difficulties in implementing research introduction, along with the heterogeneity in the implementation of the teaching unit that could affect students’ professionalization process.
