The objective of this article is to present the theory of power as knowing participation in change, developed by Elizabeth Ann Manhart Barrett. This theory is inspired by Martha Rogers’ model of the unitary human being, which views individuals as open systems, integrated with their environment and constantly interacting and evolving. For Barrett, power is the ability to consciously and intentionally participate in processes of change, manifested through awareness of possibilities and choices, the ability to make informed decisions, the freedom to act, and active involvement in transformations. Barrett’s theory of power is used in nursing research and practice, providing a framework to promote personal and professional empowerment and to encourage more active and conscious participation in changes within various health care contexts.
