According to Julie Barroso, fatigue related to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) differs from other types of fatigue, and targeted nursing interventions must be proposed to enhance the well-being of people living with HIV (PLHIV). Beyond the effects of HIV infection itself, stressful life experiences—such as trauma during childhood and adulthood, as well as post-traumatic stress—contribute to psychological distress, depression, and anxiety, all of which can exacerbate fatigue in PLHIV. Barroso recommends cognitive-behavioral interventions as effective strategies to manage stress and alleviate fatigue.
