Hildegard Peplau has contributed to nursing as a clinical expert, teacher, author, leader, and theorist. Her theoretical and clinical work led to the development of a specialized field of psychiatric nursing. The descriptive theory of interpersonal relations proposes a therapeutic process that promotes personal development. The interpersonal relations process is a continuum divided into 4 interlocking phases. Throughout the care episode, the nurse and the patient adopt different roles, eventually arriving at shared goals and a common understanding of the situation. Her theory of interpersonal relations in nursing can be used in all areas of practice. Peplau’s theory of interpersonal relations has stood the test of time, and is still as relevant and useful today in practice as it is in research.
